Graham Ashton says Victoria’s police shortage is no secret
Victoria’s chief police commissioner says the state’s police shortage is no secret.
It follows claims from the union the force is under siege and urgently needs another 3,300 officers.
Police Association secretary Ron Iddles revealed on Wednesday officers were being forced to play ‘Russian Roulette’ with lives due to the shortage.
Graham Ashton told Neil Mitchell more officers were needed, particularly in ‘growth’ areas in Melbourne’s south-east and west.
‘We know that’s an issue for us,’ Mr Ashton said on 3AW Mornings.
‘It’s not a surprise we need more police.
‘That’s something we’ve been working on for a while.’
