Tough new laws to stop serious offenders escaping with a ‘slap on the wrist’
Tough news will be introduced to parliament on Wednesday, in a bid to ensure serious offenders don’t escape with just a slap on the wrist for their crimes.
The legislation would stop Community Corrections Orders from being handed down in cases of manslaughter, arson, child homicide and kidnapping.
The orders were originally introduced in 2013 under the former government.
Shadow Attorney General John Pesutto is critical of the time it’s taken for the Andrews Government to act.
‘What we’ve seen is very violent offenders avoid jail,’ he said.
‘We need this legislation and have needed it for a long time.
‘It’s about time we’ve seen the government finally act on this.’
