Lawyer X identified: Victoria’s big secret revealed

Nicola Gobbo can now be revealed as the gangland lawyer and police informer, Lawyer X.

Ms Gobbo helped convict more than 380 people, including some of her own clients.

The lifting of suppression orders ends a near five-year, multi-million dollar court battle by Victoria Police to keep the scandal and her identity secret.

Ms Gobbo’s role in helping police convict some of her clients prompted the Andrews Government to announce a Royal Commission into Informers last year.

One of the tasks of the Royal Commission is to find out how many convictions — including those of mafia and gangland figures — are in jeopardy.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton yesterday told Neil Mitchell Ms Gobbo’s safety is now in jeopardy.

The court has previously heard there are other measures police can take to ensure Ms Gobbo remains safe.

Leading media lawyer Justin Quill, whose Macpherson Kelley firm played a leading role in having the suppression orders lifted, told Tom Elliott he believes “it is undoubted that her life is at risk”.

But not more so than yesterday.

“The question, I think, really is: If someone’s going to analyse the identification of her today, whether that (risk) has increased,” he said on 3AW Drive

“My suggestion would be that it hasn’t increased.

“She’s already at risk, she’s going to remain at risk a long time. That’s because of what she did and what Victoria Police did, not because of what the media did.

“The onus now falls back on Victoria Police; they’re the ones that created this nightmare situation.

“They are the ones now that have to do their job and ensure Nicola Gobbo remains safe.”

Mr Quill also told Tom Elliott:

  • Why he’s embarrassed of Victoria
  • Why he doesn’t feel sorry for Ms Gobbo
