Mental health experts slam Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, accuses show of ‘glamourising’ suicide
Leading child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg says he’s deeply concerned by the new Netflix hit series 13 Reasons Why.
He said it was dangerous.
The show details a fictional story of a teenage girl who took her own life.
She leaves behind a series of tapes blaming people for it.
It’s left mental health experts furious.
‘I’m not trying to silence conversation about suicide ? I think we should talk about it,’ Dr Carr-Gregg said on 3AW Mornings.
But he has three major problems.
- It doesn’t talk about help-seeking ‘at all.’
- All the adults in the show are ‘too busy or disinterested’ to help.
- It ‘sanitises, normalises and glamourises’ suicide.
‘It gives the impression that if you take your own life as a form of revenge – that’s a good idea and it’s so not,’ Dr Carr-Gregg said.
‘It’s literally a little manual for suicide, it’s that bad.’
