UPDATE

A man has been arrested over the murder of Aiia Maasarwe.

EARLIER

Police are increasing numbers and patrols in the Bundoora area after the body of Aiia Maasarwe was found this morning.

Passers-by came across the 21-year-old’s in scrub on Main Drive near Plenty Road about 7am on Wednesday.

Police say it appears the victim was assaulted prior to her death but the exact circumstances are yet to be determined.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper told Tom Elliott police aren’t sure exactly what time the victim was last seen alive.

“We really need the community’s help on this one,” Det Insp Stamper said.

“We’re going through and trying to eliminate missing persons, but we don’t have an identification at this stage.

“There were elements of the deceased which suggested she’d been assaulted.”
