South Sudanese basketball tournament cancelled, conflicting opinions as to why…
An annual upcoming basketball tournament involving members of the South Sudanese community has been cancelled because organisers say they can’t get a stadium to host it.
The South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association says media coverage of crime involving youth of African descent is the reason.
But Karen Pearce, General Manager of Strategy and Inclusion at Basketball Victoria, said a venue had in fact been secured.
“But the SSANBA community decided to cancel the event,” she said.
“I think there were a few stipulations that were put in place by local councils – that we had to do and would have got done – but I think, in the end, it was just going to be a little too hard.”
