Last songs: Iconic Myer Christmas CD cancelled after 25 years
FIRST on the RUMOUR FILE
A Christmas institution that spawned one of Australia’s most loved songs is about to disappear.
Myer’s The Spirit Of Christmas albums have been raising money for the Salvation Army every year since 1993.
Featuring Christmas carol covers and originals from big name artists including Olivia Newton-John and John Farnham, sales from the albums have raised more than $8 million for the charity.
But, following a Rumour File tip-off, Ross and John have confirmed this year’s edition will be the last.
A Myer spokesperson said it was “due to the decreasing demand for CDs”.
“We have an ongoing commitment to the Salvation Army, with whom we have enjoyed a 25 year history, and we continue to support as a key partner through our Community Investment Program.”
The Spirit Of Christmas is responsible for one of the most popular song’s written by Paul Kelly.
The iconic Australian folk-rock artist wrote How To Make Gravy for the 1996 edition because his first choice, a cover of Robbie Robertson’s “Christmas Must Be Tonight”, had already been done by James Blundell.
