Victoria’s youth justice system in crisis following growing number of major incidents
Victoria’s youth justice system is said to be in crisis, following yet another riot.
There’s been a number of major incidents at the states youth detention centres in recent months but this is said to be the worst yet.
Senior Youth Justice sources have told the Herald Sun the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre is ‘out of control’.
Detainees, including some of the most serious youth offenders in the state, armed themselves with makeshift weapons smashing windows and keeping guards at bay for about three hours on Saturday.
The situation so bad that even specially trained guards deemed it too dangerous to enter the Deakin unit from 7pm to 10pm.
The Department of Health and Human Services says no-one was injured in the incident.
While the Andrews Government has blamed the previous government for understaffing issues, which its working to address.
