Religious schools should be able to run their schools aligning with their religious beliefs, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

But the PM also told Neil Mitchell laws that allow religious schools to ban gay kids and teachers should be “fine-tuned” to focus on the interests of the child.

“Religious schools should be able to run their schools based on their religious principles,” Mr Morrison said.

NEIL: But is it a good law to say a school or any organisation to discriminate against a child on the basis of their sexuality?

PM: There’s no evidence of them having done it. No one is suggesting to me that that law should be abolished.

NEIL: But are you personally comfortable with the idea of discriminating against anybody on the grounds of the gender or sexuality?

PM: Or their religion. I’m not comfortable discrimination against people’s religious faiths, against gender, sexuality, race. What this report is about is ensuring people can’t be discriminated against because of their religious beliefs.
