Police say the truck which hit and killed a man on the Ring Road this morning had been straddling the emergency lane and the far left lane.

Two men from Hoppers Crossing, a 23-year-old and 34-year-old had parked their truck in the emergency lane, near Furlong Road, Greensborough-bound about 7.20am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Clancy told Neil Mitchell the pair had gotten out to adjust the straps on their load when the 34-year-old was hit and killed by a passing truck carrying a crane.

“The driver got back into his cabin, the passenger still at the rear,” Det Snr Sgt Clancy said.

“From what we can gather the crane truck was straddling the far left lane and emergency lane and has collided into the rear of the truck.

“It pushed the truck a number of metres and veered off the road.

“The crane truck is a left-hand drive, it’s mind boggling as to why he didn’t observe the stationary truck.”

The driver of the crane truck, a 31-year-old Wendouree man, has been taken to Sunshine Police Station.

Det Snr Sgt Clancy says the dead man’s colleague is, understandably, traumatised by what he witnessed.

“He was extremely traumatised, he was taken to hospital and has been taken home, he’s certainly not in a position to be spoken to today,” he said.

Police ask for anyone with dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident, who might need counselling, to contact Major Collision.
