The polls are in: Voters react to Liberal Party carnage

The leadership chaos of the past week has seen support for the Coalition collapse in the first opinion poll since Scott Morrison took over.

Today’s numbers show just how dire the situation is for the new Prime Minister.

Newspoll figures printed in The Australian show Labor’s primary vote now stands at 41 per cent, ahead of the Coalition’s 33 per cent.

Labor leads 44-56 on a two-party-preferred basis, significantly more than the 49-51 of just a fortnight ago.

Newspoll also reveals Bill Shorten leads Mr Morrison as preferred PM, a significant turnaround after months of Malcolm Turnbull being the more popular option.

However, a separate ReachTel poll has shown Mr Morrison to be more popular than Mr Shorten.

The Prime Minister will try to move on from the polls by travelling to drought-affected parts of Queensland later this morning.
