Australia’s peak motoring body says it’s a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ when it comes to a congestion tax for Melbourne motorists.

Melbourne City Council has outlined a plan for a congestion tax for road users, an opt-in system that would replace registration fees and drivers would be charged per kilometre with higher fees during peak hour.

Both sides of government have rejected the plan as it stands but Dave Jones, manager of mobility advocacy at the RACV, told Tom Elliott he thinks the congestion tax will ‘definitely’ be enforced in the future.

“It’s going to take time and people need to be shown how it could work,” Mr Jones said.

“If it means getting rid of fuel excise and reducing or eliminating car registration then yes, we are in support of it at a nation-wide level.”
