Neil Mitchell says in his view Barnaby Joyce has blown any chance at garnering public support.

Reports emerged on the weekend the deputy prime minister and his partner Vikki Campion will appear exclusively on Seven’s Sunday Night program.

It follows a tumultuous few months when the Nationals MP stood down from his role as deputy prime minister.

The Australian newspaper reports the network will pay $150,000 for the interview, although it’s believed the money will go towards their six-week-old son, Sebastian.

“Barnaby Joyce, the former deputy prime minister, to me looks hypocritical, selfish and foolish,” Neil Mitchell said.

“For a man who is applying to the Press Council apparently arguing privacy – how does that work?”

Sharri Markson, national political editor at The Daily Telegraph, broke the story about Mr Joyce’s relationship with Ms Campion.

“I think it’s pretty outrageous,” she said.

“I think Barnaby Joyce should front up to answer questions, not charge for it.”
