Gillon McLachlan’s ‘promise’ about footy at Marvel Stadium
AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has allayed fears the sport could be “Americanised” after the Walt Disney company bought the naming rights to Docklands Stadium.
Etihad Stadium will become “Marvel” Stadium from September this year.
Neil Mitchell: “Can you promise us that the stadium isn’t going to be Americanised?”
Gillon McLachlan: “I can promise you that. We are putting on games of football and sport, Neil, that’s the primary thing.
“But if there’s stuff we can do with one of the great entertainment brands of the world that appeals to kids and others and engages them on the way to the game, then I think that’s a good thing.
“It’s all about balance.”
The new name appears to have split opinion with the general public.
“If people can want to look negatively … they can,” McLachlan said.
“You’ve got to get the execution right, I concede that, but I just think there’s so much upside.”
