Neil Mitchell has called out the AFL for refusing to deal with the Ross Lyon situation publicly, saying there are several questions that “demand answers”.

It’s claimed the Fremantle coach was at the centre of a confidential settlement with a former junior staffer following allegations of harassment.

Neil Mitchell said the league more clarity was needed and that the AFL brought this on itself the day it decided to be a ‘moral beacon’ for society.

“There are questions here that demand answers because the league has set the bar so high for itself,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“If money was paid – a five-figure sum is reported – why?

“If nothing wrong was done – why was money paid? Who paid it?

“Was secrecy a condition of payment?

“When did the AFL become aware of it?

“Why does this not incur some sanction under the respect and responsibility policy?”

Carolyn Worth from the Centre Against Sexual Assault said this particular situation can’t be dealt with in private.

“I think if you’re going to bring about cultural change, especially in a public forum in a way that’s consistent and really quite clear to everyone what you’re doing, I don’t think what they’re doing is particularly consistent or clear,” Ms Worth said.
