Global fashion giant Zara has started a legal battle with an Australian children’s book author that’s sending her broke.

In what former lawyers Ross and John described as a “preposterous” case, Zara wants to stop Kay Andrews from using the name ‘Zary’.

Zary is the name of one of the characters in Ms Andrews books, and she wanted to trademark the name for a range of products including dolls and puzzles.

“She exists to make people happy, nothing to do with clothing,” Ms Andrews told Ross and John.

She said defending herself has cost “thousands”.

“I’m a single person, not a multi-national company,” she said.

“It would be great if Zara could drop this stupid case.

“They should pay my costs, they should do the right thing.”
