The City of Port Phillip has sparked anger after it passed a motion to formally oppose the proposed Adani coal mine in central Queensland, more than 2000 kilometres from its St Kilda base.

It also plans on taking out newspaper ads to highlight the news.

A disgruntled councillor who opposed the motion says residents are “sick and tired” of local council getting involved in federal issues.

Tom Elliott was alerted to the news this week.

“It’s astonishing,” Tom Elliott said.

“Why oh why is this council getting involved and spending ratepayers money on something in which they have zero jurisdiction and zero influence.”

Cr Ogy Simic, Greens councillor for Port Phillip, defended the move.

“Port Phillip is a seaside community that will be significantly impacted by climate change and environmental degradation,” he said.

However, Cr Marcus Pearl is furious.
