Australian cricket great Ian Chappell says he’s “not surprised” by David Warner’s heated exchange with Quinton de Kock and ugly altercations will continue to happen in the sport while sledging is excused as “part of the game”.

Speaking on 3AW Mornings, Chappell said he feared it would eventually lead to on-field violence when somebody crossed the line.

“It’s no surprise that this has happened,” Chappell said.

“As long as everybody – players, umpires, officials – keep saying it is part of the game, it’ll continue to happen.

“It is total stupidity to say it is part of the game – it never has been and never should be.

“I’ve been saying for years that there will be fisticuffs eventually.”
