Neil Mitchell: The bigger issue behind Brett Guerin’s downfall
Disgraced former police conduct head Brett Guerin has been “obscene, racist, offensive”, but Neil Mitchell says his downfall raises more concerning questions about IBAC.
Mr Guerin’s online behaviour was referred to the Independent Broad-Based Anti-Corruption Commission last year, but IBAC found nothing to act upon.
But fast forward to February 2018, and Melbourne’s journalist are running their own investigations.
February 23: Guerin steps down as more Vernon Demerest posts emerge
February 27: Guerin quits, but the story is unlikely to end there
“A few journalists in a few hours found something the anti-crime commission couldn’t or didn’t find. That demands answers,” he said.
“More than that, wasn’t anyone else involved in this? Was Brett Guerin acting alone?
“This is ugly, not a flippant sideshow.”
By the way: Neil Mitchell has been told Brett Guerin will “probably” leave with full entitlements, which could be in excess of $1.2m.
