A plan to tax criminals appears to have been stopped in its tracks.

The idea mooted by Victims Commissioner Greg Davies would have seen should be forced to pay compensation to victims instead of taxpayers.

It would have saved $80-90 million, but Neil Mitchell said the fact that 95% of that money would come from infringements, rather than the courts, meant it targeted the wrong people.

Later, Attorney-General Martin Pakula all but ruled it.

He said the while the government was “looking to do everything” possible, the criminal tax was “certainly not in our plans”.
