A breakthrough Alzehimer’s drug will be available to Melbourne patients from next year, after an early stage trial in the US showed promising results.

Up to 300 people will trial the experimental drug Anavex.

Monash University Associate Professor Stephen Mcfarlane spoke with 3AW’s Justin and Kate, he says the US trial has seen the drug stop the progression of dementia and in some cases the impact of the disease has been reversed.

‘Basically we saw a stabilisation of their cognitive function, so their memory abilities, and also a stabilisation of their functional abilities, abilities to do things themselves.

He tells 3AW Breakfast this has all been over a 12 month period.
