The Australian Of The Year has called for unity, as political conflict continues to increase over the date of Australia Day.

Professor Michelle Simmons spoke with Neil Mitchell on Friday.

She doesn’t have an issue with January 26 being the date we celebrate being Australian.

“I think it’s a day two phenomenal cultures met for the first time,” Professor Simmons said.

“Those cultures really are the basis of what modern Australia is today – I think we should celebrate both.

“People have huge respect for the Aboriginal culture – it’s survived for many years because it’s resilient and adaptable.

“I think it actually runs through the whole culture of Australia now.

“Everybody is envious about how great Australia is and I  think we should celebrate that.”
