Victoria Police is fast-tracking a trial for world-first technology that would stop motorists from sending or receiving text messages while driving.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton revealed to 3AW’s Tony Jones they were looking at a ‘technical fix’ in a bid to combat the issue of distracted drivers.

‘We are exploring matters at the moment to see whether we can prohibit you from being able to receive or make a text,’ he said.

The technology would take away the temptation and the opportunity while driving.

The Deputy Commissioner also discussed drag racing, the Christmas road toll, youth offenders and the recent Supreme Court decision.
