STUMPS DAY 3|   Aus 1st innings 429| Pak 1st innings 142| Aus 2nd innings 5/202 dec| Pak 2nd innings 2/70

Pakistan’s 2nd innings pursuit of 490 is underway.  A gripping contest unfolded early where any run was cause for praise.  The pressure from the Australian field was unyielding as the Pakistan batsmen battled against the shackles.  Despite an impressive performance the visitors lost 2 wickets in the session, Sami Aslam (15) edged Starc to Renshaw and crowd favourite Nathan Lyon snared Babah Azam (14) caught Smith.

Azhar Ali has shown technique and temperament in equal measure to remain unbeaten on 41. Younis Khan, survived a barrage from Josh Hazlewood is still on a pair.

DINNER Australia 5/202 dec  Australia lead by 489

More representative of short form cricket Australia produced a run a ball session to extend their whopping lead to 489 runs. Usman Khawaja (74) and Steve Smith (63) exuding presence and self-confidence partnered to add 111 runs.  Unhappily Nic Maddinson miscalculated a quicker bouncer from Wahab Riaz and was caught on the boundary.  Handscomb (35) and Wade (1) remain the not out batsmen.

Steve Smith subsequently closed the innings during the dinner break.  To win Pakistan will need to make 490 runs in 7 sessions

TEA Aus 1st innings 429| Pak 1st innings 142| Aus 2nd innings 2/40 Australia Lead 327

Resuming on day 3 on 8/97 Safraz Ahmed and Mohammed Amir continued their spirited partnership (54) before Amir fell to an ambiguous hot spot decision edging to Wade. Rahat Ali combined with Ahmed to add a further 21 runs to push Pakistan’s total to 142.  Somewhat unsurprisingly Dave Warner hit the crease running but left just as quickly and Renshaw edged to Younis Kahn attempting to whack it through square. Though Khawaja and Smith didn’t look completely comfortable before the break they are still there.
