The legal practicality of a new policy from the state opposition that would target dealers who sell drugs to those who go on to commit further crimes has been debated fiercely on 3AW Drive.

Matthew Guy has promised a 10-year minimum jail sentence for dealers if they supply somebody who goes on to commit murder under the influence.

“I’m sick of hearing excuses about why we can’t crack down,” Matthew Guy said.

But legal experts have scoffed at the proposal.

“I had to read it twice and even then I couldn’t make sense of it,” Greg Barns, criminal lawyer and spokesman for the Australian Lawyers Alliance, said.

Mr Barns said it was “unenforceable and impossible to police” and if it was workable, would have already been put in place.

“But it hasn’t and there’s good reason for that,” he said.
