Protesters gather at Beaumaris High School to halt removal of over 200 trees
Conservationists are promising to be out in force this morning, amid fears the state’s school building authority will push ahead with its removal of up to 220 trees at Beaumaris.
They say they’ve been anonymously tipped off about this morning’s plan.
They’ve described it as a ‘sneak attack’ from the Victorian School Building Authority, to remove trees at the Beaumaris Secondary College site.
The trees were due to be cut down in October, but in the wake of protests, the State Government ordered the authority to halt work for further community consultation.
It’s understood more than 80 of the trees need to be removed, due to poor health.
The authority has previously told 3AW that for every tree removed to make way for new buildings, two trees would replace it.
The conservationists, who are dissatisfied with the level of consultation, are planning to stage a protest from 6.45am on Monday.
