Neil Mitchell was stunned to learn the state government’s new bail laws will “gather dust” for a year before being brought into effect.

It comes after the woman allegedly involved in the shocking hit-run at Coburg that left a teenage girl fighting for life was granted bail.

“How!?” Neil Mitchell asked.

The Andrews Government passed tougher new bail laws in June, laws it said were based around a presumption against bail.

But it’s been revealed those laws are yet to be “proclaimed” and put into action.

“She’s been charged with a specific offence where there will be a presumption against bail but she’s out because nobody has got around to an official proclamation of a law that was passed five months ago with the fanfare,” Neil Mitchell said with frustration.

“It’s still sitting on a desk somewhere, for heaven’s sake. Why!?

“Fix it.

“Five months ago we got the spin, we got the government boasting, we still haven’t got the action.”
