Monash councillors have voted to impose a cat curfew in the municipality.

Councillor Geoff Lake told Tom Elliott the curfew was “silly” and “unnecessary” and the council didn’t consult the community.

A number of councils in Melbourne have imposed a similar curfew.

Cr Lake didn’t support the curfew at the council meeting.

“In a couple of years time, when it’s implemented, residents in the City of Monash who own cats are going to need to keep those cats confined in their house during nighttime hours,” he said.

He said the council officers would have the ability to impound cats found wandering at night, and if they were unregistered or a stray cat, they would likely be put down.

“If it is registered it will likely find it way back to its owner but with a hefty fine.”

Cr Lake also spoke about the $150,000 being spent on a survey to gauge residents views on hard waste collection.
