The South Melbourne Market is set to phase out plastic shopping bags.

And plastic packaging, straws, cutlery, and coffee cups are also under the microscope in a plan to make the market environmentally friendly.

Port Phillip Council mayor Bernadene Voss told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive said the ban would come into effect next year, to coincide with the statewide ban on single use plastic bags.

“The South Melbourne Market did a survey on all the shoppers and stall holders, the results were 90 per cent were in favour of going plastic bag free,” she said.

“We wanted to trial something within our control to see if it was reasonable.”
