Every Victorian high school will have students elected to their school councils under a controversial proposal by the State Government.

In a report in The Age, Education Minister James Merlino says young people deserve a say in the direction of their school.

Tim Hall, the principal of Mansfield Secondary College, says the school has student representatives on the school council and has done so for a number of years.

“Two school captains are elected as full community members on school council each year,” he said.

“As community members they can vote and do.

“They provide thoughtful and strategic input into all of the decisions we make on school council.

“I think having active student voices works really well for us.”

The proposal would apply to all state high schools.

But Tom Elliott questioned if it was wise given 17-year-olds can’t vote or drive cars by themselves.
