Lani Brereton has more compassion than most would in her situation.

She has suffered enormously after a horror, head-on crash nearly took her life three years ago.

Behind the wheel was a drunk driver who hit her car at 170km/h on a bend in Mt Evelyn.

In the car at the time was her 9-year-old daughter, who met the driver in the days after the crash to say she’d forgiven him.

Despite being in a coma for 10 days, suffering skull fractures, collapsed lungs, broken bones and a brain injury, Ms Brereton wants to close the most painful chapter of her life.

She has a message for the man who hit her, and she wants to meet him.

‘I just want to give him a hug, he’s been remorseful the whole way through,’ she told Neil Mitchell.

‘I’m left with a lot of injuries…having said that he is human too.

‘I know that he is sorry.’

She said the important part now was helping to create ‘good members of society’.

‘I was meant to be a vegetable, I was meant to be dead. And here I am talking to you.’
