Push for permanent hate speech laws to protect LGBTQI people
Marriage equality advocates have called for permanent hate speech laws to protect the LGBTQI community.
Temporary laws have been agreed on while the postal survey takes place.
Tom Elliott tried to find out what exactly constituted “hate” speech on Wednesday.
Brian Greig from Just Equal told 3AW Drive there were booklets being sent around that compared homosexuality with pedophilia and same-sex marriage with bestiality.
“That’s the sort of hateful viciousness which I don’t believe a reasonable person would say is free speech – that’s hate speech,” he explained.
“And just as you couldn’t say those things against black people, or Jewish people – for example – you shouldn’t be able to say against LGBTI people, but there’s no federal law to address that.”
