The state government has announced changes to planning rules, which will see a mandate on the minimum size of a backyard in new housing developments.

Speaking on 3AW Drive, Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, said there has been an inconsistent application of zones in Melbourne.

‘Developments have occurred where they have been built boundary to boundary, without any real consideration of amenity issues.’

As part of the government’s refreshed Plan Melbourne blueprint, the changes will mean:

– Residential blocks between 400-500 square metres will require a 25 per cent minimum garden area.

– Blocks between 501-600 metres will require a 30 per cent minimum garden area.

– Blocks larger than 650 square metres will require a 35 per cent minimum garden area.

The changes will also see no cap on the amount of dwellings that can be built on a block.
