Daniel Andrews announces major shake-up of Victoria’s bail system
The Premier has just announced a major shake-up of the bail system in the wake of the Bourke Street tragedy.
Daniel Andrews revealed on Monday a new night court would be established.
Under the system, bail applications will be heard by a magistrate, rather than a bail justice.
As a result, magistrates will be on call after hours for bail hearings for violent, complex and serious cases.
A night court will be established in the longer term.
The man accused of the Bourke Street attack, 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas, was released on bail by a bail justice just days earlier, despite opposition by police.
The government has asked former Supreme Court judge and director of public prosecution Paul Coghlan to conduct a wide ranging review into the system.
Among a range of matters, the review will look at whether the bail justice system is needed.
