Four people have been taken to hospital, including a young child, after two trams collided in Melbourne this afternoon.

It’s believed a Route 96 tram came to a sudden halt just after it took off, causing a Route 86 tram to slam into the back of it at the corner of Bourke and Spencer streets.

The pre-school aged child was among four people who were taken to hospital in a stable condition, with paramedics treating about 15 people at the scene.

Trams have resumed on Routes 86 and 96, with Yarra Trams investigating what caused the crash.

Witness Yasmin has told 3AW she saw a pregnant woman and child go flying.

“A lady flew and hit her head, that was a bit traumatizing. I’m still shaking,” she told Tom Elliott.
