AFL postpones Opening Round clashes due to Cyclone Alfred

The AFL has postponed both Opening Round clashes in Queensland as a major cyclone closes in on the south-east of the state.
Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as a Category 1 system late Thursday night or Friday morning, bringing with it damaging winds and heavy rain.

“People’s lives and properties are more important than a game of football,” Channel 9 sports presenter Tony Jones told Jacqui Felgate.
Brisbane’s clash against Geelong is likely to be scheduled in Round 3 where both teams have a bye, while it’s unclear when Gold Coast’s match against Essendon will be rescheduled.
