Nick Kyrgios’ long-awaited Australian Open comeback is in doubt after a picked up a fresh injury days out from the first major of the year.

The 29-year-old was due to play an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic on Thursday night, but revealed he won’t take part after straining his abdomin.

The Age Tennis reporter Marc McGowan says despite Kyrgios withdrawing from the lead-up match, tournament director Craig Tiley said he was still confident he would play in the event.

“This (news) has sent a few shockwaves this morning,” he said on 3AW Afternoons.

“But Craig Tiley has spoken to reporters and he remains extremely confident that Nick Kyrgios will be there.”
