Papua New Guinea NRL team to join league in 2028 as federal government pledges to keep players safe
The Papua New Guinea NRL team is set to join the league in 2028, but the federal government has had to make a monetary pledge to ensure the safety of teams due to concerns of safety.
Nine News reporter Damian Ryan says it’s a great effort for the league with the sport being the country’s national sport but he notes there’s a reason for the deal.
“We’re putting $600 million into this deal, and we can terminate that contract if PNG does any sort of policing or security pact with China or any other regional rival,” he said.
