Tom Elliott says Melbourne’s Christmas celebrations this year are “very odd and very woke”.

The City of Melbourne unveiled its festive plans on Thursday, with First Nations people and the LGBTIQA+ community to also be celebrated in the lead up to December 25.

As the city moves into festive mode – with the Federation Square Christmas tree to be lit on November 29 – there were certain aspects of the plans which puzzled the 3AW Mornings host.

“The idea that we could have a Koorie Christmas is very odd and very woke,” he said on 3AW.

Lord mayor Nick Reece says he wanted to open up Christmas to a wide range of people in 2024.
