Tom Elliott: State government taking ‘massive gamble’ by pushing ahead with the Suburban Rail Loop
Tom Elliott has weighed in on the state government’s decision to push ahead with the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop, with project expected to cost $35 billion.
The 3AW Mornings host highlighted the level of debt the state is in right now, and contrasted the funding for the project with the “extraordinary” slash in funding for Victoria’s roads in the last financial year.
“The Suburban Rail Loop may make a lot of sense … but the problem is right now we can’t afford it!” he said to open up his 3AW Mornings program.

There is currently no business case for the Suburban Rail Loop, with the federal government refusing to fund it.
“I think they’re doing it to just wedge the opposition, to wedge the Coalition … but it’s a very expensive wedge,” Elliott said about Labor’s motivations with their latest move.
