Alannah & Madeline Foundation hit by online bullying from the gun lobby

NEIL MITCHELL

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation has been hit with serious online abuse.

The children’s charity has been trolled by gun advocates, who posted threats to personal safety amid a range of abuse.

CEO Lesley Podesta told Neil Mitchell staff have found the abuse “overwhelming”.

“We teach kids about cyber-safety and anti-bullying, so we’ve had to live our values,” Ms Podesta said.

“We rise above it.”

Neil said the abuse is “unacceptable” and “obscene”.

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation grew out of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, and is a key voice in the gun control debate.

Ms Podesta said the abuse had come from “extreme elements” of the gun lobby.

“Our experience has been that the vast majority of licenced shooters in our country are decent and thoughtful people,” she said.
