‘Won’t make much difference’: Shadow Police Minister reacts to youth justice reform
The Victorian government has backflipped from their pledge to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 by 2027, as part of their youth justice reforms.
Their proposed amendments to the Youth Justice Bill will lead to bail decision-makers needing to assess both the risk to community safety and the risk of further serious offences when deciding if bail is appropriate.
Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin joined 3AW Drive to share his point of view on the amendments made by the government.
“If you reverse the changes that were made back in March to weaken bail laws, that is the only alternative to stop kids getting out on bail when they shouldn’t be,” Battin said on 3AW Drive.
