Tom Elliott has given his thoughts on the push by a group of academics and students at La Trobe University to rename it due to Charles La Trobe’s involvement in colonialism and genocide against the Indigenous people.

The 3AW Mornings host said “pretty much every Anglo-Saxon in the 1840s, 50s and 60s was involved in some way in colonialism”.

“Where does it end?” he said.

Associate Professor at School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Dr Lauren Rosewarne, says it’s an issue which is very important to younger people.

“The university has already made a lot of efforts in what they’d call ‘de-colonialising the university and de-colonialising the curriculum'”, Dr Rosewarne said.

“That’s something that’s happening at a lot of universities, mine included.”
