There are reports federal immigration minister Andrew Giles may be in trouble after his department badly handled immigration detainees.

Nine Radio federal politics reporter, Zac De Silva, says the issue dates back to a clash between former Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“When Labor came to power, they tried to address this, and they brought in something called Direction 99,” he told Tom Elliott.

He also says Anthony Albanese and Giles have revealed they’ll be rewriting the direction.

“[They] said … ‘The way its been interpreted is not the way we intended it to work, these people shouldn’t be in Australia’,” he said.
