Riots and protests continue in New Caledonia as the french colony remains in a state of emergency after four people, including a police officer were killed.

Woodend local, Max Winchester, says he’s concerned he could be stuck on the island for a while.

“We were on our way, just overnight, to catch our flight the next day, and things just turned … cars were being set alight, things were being set alight,” he told Tom Elliott.

Mr Winchester claims they’ve been abandoned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

“We called DFAT twice, and their response was basically we’re on our own,” he added.

The riots come after authorities announced a new bill, which would see French residents who have lived on the island for ten years, vote in elections.
