It can now be revealed the man police allege murdered Ballarat man Samantha Murphy is the son of former Richmond and Geelong footballer Orren Stephenson.

22-year-old Patrick Orren Stephenson was arrested early on Wednesday morning in relation to the case, with a suppression order initially concealing his identity.

On Friday morning, the order was lifted as several media outlets battled to publish the name of the accused killer.
