Leigh Matthews says the AFL should consider further reducing the number of interchange rotations allowed to make the sport safer.

Concussion is one of the biggest issues facing the sport following a fortnight which has seen Angus Brayshaw forced into medical retirement following repeated head knocks, plus the fall out from Jimmy Webster’s head-high hit in a pre-season match on Sunday.

75 rotations are allowed during every match, but Matthews says the AFL should look to go even further to slow the style of game down and as a result, making it safer to play.

“That might just be one lever (available to the AFL) to make the game a little slower,” he told Wide World of Sports.

“(It would mean) less high-speed collisions.”
