Deputy lord mayor on the violent scenes outside Town Hall
Pro-Israeli and Pro-Palestinian protestors have clashed outside town hall last night as the City of Melbourne voted down a motion to call for a cease-fire.
Deputy lord mayor, Nicholas Reece, says people have the right to protest, but not the right to cause harm.
“I haven’t seen the footage … I do think any violence on the streets of Melbourne is absolutely deplorable and cannot be stood for,” he told Tom Elliott.

He also says he was the deciding vote which led to the motion being struck down.
“I think we got to a really good place last night, the motion that was put forward by Councillor Jamal Hakim was not supported, but an alternative motion was put forward,” he said.
Victoria Police confirmed there were no major incidents reported but they did move on a number of individuals, including two men who walked through a protest group of more than 200 people. The men did not report being assaulted to police at the time. A man who was filming the rally reported he was kicked in the leg by a protester. Police are reviewing CCTV and encourage anyone who experienced or witnessed prejudice-motivated crime to report it to police.
