Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff has called an early election, which could have huge ramifications for the future of footy in the state.

Mr Rockliff has been an avid supporter of both the mooted AFL team and a new centrally-located planned Hobart stadium, which the AFL says is a non-negotiate for the new team to begin in the league.

Independent Tasmanian MP John Tucker – who was part of the group of MPs which forced an early state election – told Sam McClure he had his doubts whether the stadium at Macquarie Point would be able to be built with the $715 million budgeted.

“What I want to make sure is we get the best deal for Tasmania,” he told Wide World of Sports.

“The stadium is going through the cost process through the parliament and then the parliament will decide if it goes any further than that.”
