Traders on St Kilda’s Inkerman Street say a council proposal will “crush” local businesses if it goes ahead.

The City of Port Phillip is considering installing a protected bike corridor over 1.2km on the street, removing 116 of the existing 180 car parks.

Owner of Australian Karaoke on Inkerman Street, Jaz Bradley, told Tony Moclair businesses on the strip depend on clients seeking them out rather than relying on foot traffic, so parking is critical to their survival.

“Come and talk to the people who will be affected about ways we can improve safety on the street – reducing speed limits, putting some speed humps in, giving cyclists priority start at intersections where the intersections are happening, so we can have a satisfactory outcome for all road users,” she said.
